Meet the therapists of Hands of Healing...
Jennifer Shideler
My name is Jennifer Shideler, owner of Hands of Healing Therapeutic Massage, Inc., and for me, bodywork is more than a career, it's a calling. After graduating from Kansas State University with a B.S. in Kinesiology and completing the 500+ hour program at BMSI, I became AMTA certified and a licensed massage therapist in 1998. During this time I worked at a physical therapy clinic, where I learned how to carefully and effectively treat even difficult cases. Currently, I hold a National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. I specialize in Deep Tissue, Swedish, as well as Trigger point and Myofasial release, passive range of motion stretching and relfexology.
I teach a 12 hour self-care/wellness continuing education class as the Body Mind Spirit Institute twice a year. I find it rewarding to teach future massage therapists how to take care of themselves so they can better care for others. In this light I can apply the "self-care" knowledge to my clients.

From Michael:
Hi, my name is Michael Lathrop. I am a licensed professional massage therapist with Hands of Healing. I became a professional in 1992 so I bring 15 years of experience to the table. In 1994 I became Nationally Certified and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association. I stay current with my yearly continuing education requirements and most generally exceed them.
I have worked in a variety of professional settings. I honed my sports massage skills working with athletes of varying degrees at a local fitness center. Therapeutic massage helps the body recover from strenuous exercise, overtraining or perhaps trouble spots from past injuries. It will help decrease the possibility of injury, enhance one's performance and help with recovery after a competition.
During my 8 years at a Chiropractic/Massage clinic, I worked closely with the doctors and learned a great deal about the nervous system. The nervous system is the prime controller of homeostasis, which enables the body to stay alive in an ever changing environment. Every time a massage therapist engages a muscle the therapist is stimulating the nervous system.
The nerves innervate muscles along specific nerve pathways which have a direct affect upon the muscles. For example, the nerves assembled with the 5th cervical vertebrae affect more than 31 mucles bilaterally along its nerve pathway. These muscles can impinge on the nerve causing pain. If one clears the nerve pathway by stimulating and relaxing the muscles along this path one can relieve the pain and create a lasting change. This same concept can be used in other aspects as well.
I am well versed in the Myokenesthetic System which utilizes this very concept. It is a specific active and passive stretching technique applied with compression that sides in the healing and release of muscular tension and nerve pain.
I incorporate a variety of techniques within my practice to get the most beneficial results. I customize my work for your specific needs. I like to do firm work so we can affect the soft issue but not so firm that one's muscles resist. With 15 years of experience to guide you, let me help you create a feel good life.
In health,
Michael
